Here are different ways to greet someone:
AНLĀNأَهلان
ou
AНLĀأَهلا
are very simple. They’re just a sort of “hi” or “hello”. There is
also
ЗS-SLĀMAعالسّلامة, which is typically Tunisian. It comes from
SALĀMAسَلامة, meaning “protection”, especially in travel. It’s a way to acknowledge
God’s protection for someone in the travel that brought them to your
greeting. The true form would be:
EL-ꜧAMD LIL̄AН ЗLĀ SALĀMTIKالحَمد لِلَّه علا سَلامتِك, meaning “praise to Allah for your protection”. In Tunisian Arabic, it’s
just a simple way to greet people. In the region where I lived, people
rarely said
ЗS-SLĀMAعالسّلامة, and just said
SALĀMسَلام, meaning “peace”.
“SALUT”“SALUT”
is not used much, except by people who are really influenced by French.
It’s a way to say “hi” in French. In the show where excerpts are from, the
two characters using it are high class and use loads of French words. Try
to hear/find them all in the next clip!
